About

European City of Science 2024

KATOWICE has been announced the European City of Science 2024 (ECSK 2024). This prestigious title is awarded by the European Commission to deepen the changes accompanying the transformation of society through science in various European cities.

Attaining this title for Katowice is an important distinction, bearing a symbolic significance as well. It highlights how the character of the city has changed – having been associated for decades solely with heavy industry, now Katowice serves as a hub of science.  The activities within the ECSK 2024 are carried out along thematic paths, enabling the event to address current needs and touch upon the most important issues such as Climate and Environment, Health and Quality of Life, Industries of the Future, Social Innovations,    Industrial and Cultural Heritage, and Creation and Criticism.

The title of the European City of Science belonged to: Leiden (2022), Trieste (2020), Toulouse (2018), Manchester (2016), Copenhagen (2014), Dublin (2012), Turin (2010), Barcelona (2008), Munich (2006), and Stockholm (2004).

50 Weeks in the City of Science

This is one of the most exceptional events in the history of Katowice, uniting the city’s and region’s leading universities, cultural institutions, and organisations.

The programme, supervised by Łukasz Lamża, PhD and a team of specialists, was designed to bring knowledge closer to the residents of the City of Science – week by week, through selected themes. The thematic scope alone stimulates the imagination.  Whereas Book Week, Mountain Week, Cold Week or Industry Week are rather clear, Ice Week, Boredom Week, Organ Week, or Contrast Week may cause many different connotations. This is the goal of the event – to spark curiosity and present science in unconventional contexts.
